Consumer Complaint: Even today, it's common for shopkeepers to arbitrarily sell a product at a price higher than its actual price, or MRP. People often remain silent, thinking that complaining will be pointless or that the process will be too cumbersome. But that's not the case. This is not only a violation of consumer rights,
but also against the law. Selling any item above its maximum retail price, or MRP, is strictly prohibited. If a shopkeeper is caught doing so, strict action can be taken against them. The government has now simplified the complaint process to protect consumer rights. Learn what to do.
Where to complain?
If you're being charged more than the MRP in a shop, mall, or restaurant. You can immediately file a complaint. The Indian government has issued a national consumer helpline number, 1800-11-4000. You can register your complaint directly by calling this number. The government has also created a website:
consumerhelpline.gov.in. You can file a complaint online by visiting this portal. The complaint must include the product name, the shopkeeper's name, and a photo or a copy of the bill. Upon filing, the relevant department investigates and initiates action against the offending shopkeeper. In many cases, customers receive a refund.
Keep these things in mind:
If you are being asked for more than the MRP at a shop, mall, or hotel, there's no need to argue or fight. Remain calm and take a photo of the bill or packaging. If possible, record a short video clip. These will serve as evidence when filing a complaint later.
It's worth noting that Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh account for the highest number of such complaints nationwide. While many cases also come from states like Delhi, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, the government is constantly monitoring such cases to curb consumer exploitation.
