A 22-year-old man from Mangaluru has been arrested for allegedly entering the IIT-Bombay campus without permission and staying there for nearly 20 days by pretending to be a student.
The man, identified as Bilal Ahmed Teli, was caught on June 17 while sitting in a classroom during a lecture. According to the police, he first entered the campus on May 27 to attend a one-day programme. But instead of leaving, he continued to attend classes during the day and sleep in hostel rooms at night, even though he was not a student.
Used fake IDs and numbers
To avoid being detected, Teli allegedly used 21 different email IDs and multiple phone numbers so that he wouldn’t leave any digital trace. His actions have raised serious concerns about campus security at one of India’s top engineering institutions.
FIR lodged, now in police custody
The Powai police registered an FIR against him on June 21, and on Wednesday, Teli was formally arrested. He was produced before a court and sent to 14 days of police custody.
The case has now been handed over to the crime branch’s crime intelligence unit for a detailed investigation. Teli has been charged with cheating, forgery, and breach of trust.
