Retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a hefty ₹23 crore before the last Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen could be on his way out of the franchise ahead of the mini auction next month, The Times of India reported.

According to the report, multiple IPL franchises have picked up “serious chatter” about Klaasen’s possible release and have included him in their wishlist. The 34-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, had a mixed IPL 2025 season, despite a stunning 105 off 39 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), his other knocks lacked consistency.

Klaasen’s retention at ₹23 crore, higher than captain Pat Cummins’ ₹18 crore deal, is now being reconsidered as SRH looks to free up purse space. The report adds that the move could be a calculated one, aimed at “rebuilding the squad” after a disappointing sixth-place finish in IPL 2025, following their runners-up run in 2024.

“There are strong murmurs and it could well be a smart move by SRH if they do that. Going into the auction with ₹23 crore more allows them a reasonable shot to fill in the crucial gaps, assemble a penetrating bowling attack and get their middle-order act right. They can even have a fair shot at getting the South African back (for) around ₹15 crore and the balance can help them do some effective shopping,” TOI quoted an industry source as saying.

SRH’s other high-profile signings, Mohammed Shami (₹10 crore) and Harshal Patel (₹8 crore), didn’t deliver the expected results. Shami struggled with fitness issues, while Patel, despite taking 16 wickets in 13 games, leaked runs at nearly 10 an over. While Shami’s recent domestic form has attracted interest from other teams, franchises are expected to proceed with caution, the report added.

In addition, SRH’s management is keen to strengthen its spin department. As per TOI, the franchise was “not pleased” with Rahul Chahar, who featured in just one game after “underwhelming performances” in intra-squad matches. This forced the team to rotate between lesser-known spinners like Zeeshan Ansari and Harsh Dubey through the season.

Klaasen, however, remains the focal point of SRH’s pre-auction deliberations. With the retention deadline nearing, several franchises are reportedly keeping funds aside to bid for the hard-hitting right-hander. The auctions for the 2026 season are likely to be held in the second or third week of December, with December 13-15 emerging as the probable window, as per CricBuzz.
