Mumbai: TV Narendran, global CEO and MD of Tata Steel, is widely expected to be appointed to the Tata Sons board as a group company representative, according to highly placed executives.
Narendran, 60, is understood to have met Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran and held discussions recently in this regard at Bombay House, sources said. Noel Tata, Tata Trusts chairman and a nominee on the Tata Sons board, is vice chairman of Tata Steel.
The move comes as Ralf Speth, former CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, steps down from the Tata Sons board on turning 70 this month. Speth had joined in October 2016 following the ouster of former chairman Cyrus Mistry. Independent director Leo Puri resigned in April and Ajay Piramal, 70, exited last month. That means three board positions to fill at the Tata Group holding company.
The Tata Sons board comprises executive directors, non-executive directors and independent directors. Given Narendran's experience and long association with the group, he is seen internally as a natural choice.
Tata Sons did not comment on the matter.
Previously, Ralph Speth and Bhaskar Bhat were group nominees on the Tata Sons board.
Narendran has over three decades of experience in mining and metals, having joined Tata Steel in 1988 after completing his MBA from IIM Calcutta. He took over the top job at the company in 2013 and has led its growth strategy, both organic and inorganic. His tenure has seen marquee moves such as the Bhushan Steel acquisition and the Kalinganagar expansion. He's regarded as a key voice in the global steel industry, serving on the board of the World Steel Association and driving sustainability efforts.
"Only a handful of senior Tata executives today match the breadth of Narendran's experience and leadership," said a group executive.
As per the Articles of Association (AoA), Tata executives retire at 65 and at 70 for those in board-level roles. The upcoming appointments will mark the evolution of the Tata Sons board from the one that was reconstituted under former chairman Ratan Tata in 2016, following the late Mistry's exit.
Apart from Noel Tata, other current board members include Vijay Singh (76) and Venu Srinivasan (72). Harish Manwani and Anita M George are independent directors at Tata Sons.
