Ahmedabad: A tragic and heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Bagodara village of Bavla taluka, Ahmedabad district, as five members of the same family allegedly committed suicide late on Saturday night. The deceased include a husband, wife, and their three young children, all of whom consumed poison in their rented home near the Bagodara bus station.
According to police, the initial probe suggests that the family may have taken the extreme step due to financial hardship. The incident has left the local community in shock and grief.
The deceased have been identified as Vipul Kanjibhai Vaghela (32), who was a rickshaw driver, Sonalben Vipulbhai Vaghela (26) – Wife, Kareena alias Simran (11) – Daughter, Mayur (8) – Son, and Princess (5) – Daughter.
Originally from Devi Pujak Vas in Barkotha, Dholka, the Vaghela family had moved to Bagodara just a month ago and were living in a rented house near the local bus depot.
Incident Timeline and Discovery:
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday, sometime before 1:30 am. The family reportedly ingested poison during the night. When the next-door tenant noticed something unusual, they alerted the landlord, Wadhabhai Amrabhai Boliya, who then informed the police.
“I rented the house to this family just a month ago. Around 1:30 am, the neighbors alerted me about the incident. I immediately called the police,” said Boliya.
Emergency response teams, including the Bagodara police, 108 ambulance service, and senior officials from Ahmedabad Rural Police, rushed to the scene. SP Ahmedabad Rural, ASP Dhandhuka Division, LCB and SOG officers, and FSL experts inspected the site and initiated a thorough investigation.
Investigation and Suspected Motive:
While a final conclusion is yet to be drawn, preliminary findings indicate financial distress as the possible trigger. Vipulbhai, the head of the family, earned a modest income through rickshaw driving. The family’s economic struggles may have pushed them to the brink.

The mobile phones of the deceased couple have been found switched off for two days. Investigators believe the phones may contain critical information or a suicide note. A forensic team is analyzing the scene and toxicology reports are expected later in the day from Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where all five bodies were sent for postmortem.
