Mumbai: Two women sustained injuries on Wednesday after a slab collapsed in a five-storey residential building located in the Emarta area of Byculla in South Mumbai. The incident took place during the day, prompting an immediate response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade and Agripada police officials.
The injured were rushed to the civic-run Nair Hospital for medical attention, reported IANS. According to the Mumbai Fire Department, a probe is underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
Thane Building Partially Collapses
This incident came just a day after a part of a decades-old building in Maharashtra’s Thane city gave way, triggering the evacuation of several families. The Thane incident occurred around 2:25 am on Tuesday at the Nandadeep building situated in the Kisan Nagar area of Wagle Estate. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that case.
Officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said the building was more than 50 years old and had been declared dangerous under the C2B category after a structural audit earlier this year. The C2B classification refers to buildings that are considered structurally unsafe and require urgent repairs or demolition. The collapse involved a section of the third-floor roof and the stair gallery, which fell while residents were still inside.
17 Families Evacuated From Dangerous Structure
Emergency services, including the fire brigade and municipal disaster response teams, arrived swiftly and successfully evacuated all 17 families residing in the building. The evacuees were shifted to safer accommodations by civic authorities. As an added precaution, residents from two nearby buildings were also asked to vacate their homes temporarily.
Yasin Tadvi, head of TMC’s disaster management cell, confirmed the details and stressed the importance of proactive action when dealing with structurally weak buildings. “All emergency teams, including the fire brigade and municipal staff, reached the spot promptly and ensured everyone was evacuated safely,” he said.
The incident reignited concerns over the deteriorating condition of aging buildings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. As per civic records, Thane alone has 4,407 buildings classified as dangerous, with the Mumbra area accounting for 1,343 of them, the highest among all localities.
With the monsoon approaching, officials have once again urged residents of high-risk structures to cooperate with evacuation efforts and consider relocation, even if temporary, for their own safety.
