Alarming data shows nearly nearly 2% of adults in England and Wales were victims of sex assault in the year to March.

Data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates around 900,000 people had experienced sex assault, including attempted offences. The figures reveal that one in eight for women experienced domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking in that time.

For men it is slightly lower at about one in 12. It is the first time an estimate has been made of the combined prevalence of domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking.

The figures also show knife crime and robberies fell slightly in the year to March, but shoplifting continues to rocket.
