Police have discovered human remains during their search for a mumwho vanished almost 20 years ago.
Malgorzata Wnuczek was 27-years-old when she went missing after catching a bus in Leicester on May 31, 2006 - with her family last hearing from her in a text two days prior. Specialist officers have now discovered human remains after scouring a piece of land off Leicester's Great Central Way as part of their investigation into her disappearance, Leicestershire Police confirmed. The force said it was "unknown" whether the remains were that of Ms Wnuczek and that "further forensic tests will be undertaken to establish the identity of the person in question".

Wnuczek, who was originally from Poland, was last seen boarding a bus from her workplace at Peter Jackson Logistics. Officers said fresh searches began on September 30 "following further information received from colleagues in Poland". Det Supt Jenni Greenway, senior investigating officer, said police will continue searching the area "over the coming weeks".
"While I cannot go into specific details at this time, we have received information that human remains could be buried in this area which could potentially help us establish what happened to Malgorzata," she said. "I remain firm in my belief that there may be people still living in the city who know what happened to her. In particular, I'm extending this appeal to our Polish community.

"For nearly 20 years now, Malgorzata's family have lived their lives not knowing what happened to her and we owe it to them to answer the questions they have."
In 2016, on the 10th anniversary of Wnuczek's disappearance, police issued a fresh appeal for information, which returned no leads. The East Midlands Special Operations Unit also scanned the River Soar in 2023 after receiving a tip from Polish police, but the search did not get officers any closer to finding out what may have happened to her.
Leicestershire Police believe there could be people still living in Leicester who may have information on the circumstances surrounding Wnuczek's disappearance. The force is especially extending this appeal to the Polish community as their investigation into the case continues.
