The selectors have announced the Indian team is going on a tour of England. There was a lot of discussion about who would become the captain after Rohit Sharma retired from Tests. Some said Jasprit Bumrah would be the next captain, while some said Rishabh Pant should be given this responsibility. Some people believe that KL Rahul or Ravindra Jadeja also has a claim to become the Test captain. The selectors decided to give this responsibility to Shubman Gill.
Next month, when the Indian team plays a 5-match Test series against England, everyone's eyes will be on Shubman Gill. This player will create history as soon as the series starts. Shubman Gill's name will be recorded in the pages of history as soon as he takes over the command of the Indian Test team in the Test series against England. This series will start on June 20 at Headingley Stadium, Leeds.
This was done by Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (May 24). He announced an 18-member squad for the first assignment of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) circle. Shubman Gill was made the captain and Rishabh Pant the vice-captain of the Test team. Gill will create history when he captains India for the first time in the Leeds Test match. Gill will become the first Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to make his captaincy debut at the age of 25. The Master Blaster achieved this special feat in the year 1996.
25-year-old Gill will become the fifth youngest captain in India's history after Mansoor Ali Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri. He has a chance to make some big records in England. He can become the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match on foreign soil. This is the first time that right-handed batsman Gill will captain India in Test cricket. He captained the team in the five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe last year. Gill was also the vice-captain of the Rohit-led Indian team earlier this year that won the 2025 Champions Trophy.
