Former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola has raised concerns about the 'attitude' within his old squad after Lewis Hamilton's post-race interview at the Canadian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion made a cryptic comment about the goings-on behind the scenes at Maranello following another challenging weekend. Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc have been forced to demonstrate immense patience in 2025.
The Scuderia currently sit sandwiched between Mercedes and Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship standings, 191 points behind leaders McLaren, whom they fought for the 2024 title in Abu Dhabi just seven months ago. Even more alarming is the lack of progress with the SF-25. The gap to McLaren is only widening, and Hamilton and Leclerc are growing frustrated with every passing Grand Prix. In Montreal, after finishing sixth, the squad's British star gave an intriguing interview.
"Of course I'm asking for these things," the 40-year-old said when asked about upgrades. "I don't know why we haven't been bringing upgrades. I think we have one hopefully coming soon. The mindset for me, I'm like: 'There's a lot of changes that need to be made in the system.'
"I wish I could tell you what's happening. There's a lot going on in the background. Yeah, I can't say too much about it. There's so many things I wish I could tell you that could explain the things that have happened this year, the problems we had and what's going on within the organisation.
"But my goal is to try and positively influence, try and get change so we can have long-term success. There's a lot of changes that we need. For me, it's that foundation building. We're not fighting for a championship."
These comments caught the attention of former Ferrari race engineer Mazzola, who has been critical of Fred Vasseur's leadership. The Frenchman is under pressure to turn the Prancing Horse's fortunes around with his contract set to expire at the end of the year, and speculation surrounding his future only amplifies with every passing race.
"Hamilton's interview is sensational," Mazzola told Sky Race Anatomy. "You have to read it well. It talks about organisation, about mentality. [He] has found himself in a team that needs to be rebuilt, as his father also said some time ago.
"Then he talks about these developments not coming, when we are in the tenth race now. All this leaves me very perplexed, because from a team like Ferrari, you expect all the infrastructure to win, not that Hamilton arrives and says everything is missing.
"Within the company, there should already be this mentality, and if it's not there, it's a worrying thing, very worrying. Obviously, around him [Hamilton], there is something that doesn't add up."
