Germany has been accused of secretly dumping migrants in Holland at night, as tensions over immigration rise. Europe has long been a magnet for immigrants, as they seek better life opportunities for themselves and their families.
Last year, there were approximately 239,159 illegal crossings made at borders of the European Union. One of the largest migrant groups were Syrians, who made up 44,237 of the total, according to data from statista.com Germany is one of the country's of choice for migrants, with many remembering Angela Merkel's decision to accept hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees in the wake of the civil war in 2015.
The then German Chancellor famously declared "we will manage", at a press conference on August 31 of that year. However, it is not a sentiment shard by the current Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who quipped 'we will not manage" during a campaign event in January.
Under his stewardship, the government is introducing a clamp down on immigration, in an attempt to outflank the far-right Alternative for Germany party, that has successfully weaponised migration.
And it appears that German authorities are deploying any means possible to rid the country of migrants - including smuggling them across the border to its neighbour Holland.
An investigation by the newspaper De Gelderlander found that Germany had dropped off 158 people in Dutch border towns in the last three months, without declaring them to local authorities.
The outlet carried out its investigation after video footage was shared to social media showing people being pushed out of a German police van in Venlo in the middle of the night earlier this year.
In October alone, German police are alleged to have dumped 63 migrants inside Holland in this manner.
Local residents in Heerenberg - a city straddling the Dutch-Germann border - have reported being approached by strangers asking to borrow a phone or to help them connect to the WI-FI.
A Dutch government spokesperson insisted these so-called "cold transfers" were part of binding bilateral agreements between the European countries.
"Cold and warm transfers have been taking place for years, regardless of the reintroduction of border controls," a spokesperson for the Ministry of Asylum and Migration said.
Between December 2024 and September of this year, 690 foreign nationals were transferred from Germany to the Netherlands, the ministry stated.
