It's rare to see a TV drama take hold the way this one did when it was released in 2017 and all these years later TV fans can't help but keep recommending it.
The psychological crime thriller, Mindhunter, was quick to gain fans when it first released seven years ago as a TV show . Set in the 1970s during an era when criminal profiling had just begun and based on a true crime book, the series follows the behavioural science unit in the FBI as they work to track down serial killers.
It revolves around three central characters, FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, along with psychologist Wendy Carr, who operate the FBI's Behavioural Science Unit. As a strong force, they launch an entirely new project to interview already-imprisoned murderers to try and get to grips with their behaviour and psychology.
By doing this, they hope to gain a better understanding of the current criminals they're dealing with, in the hope of solving ongoing cases. Although as the series develops, the second season is set in the 80s, detailing a real-life case of This is based on murderer Wayne Williams.
One viewer took to Rotten Tomatoes to say: "Very, very well written, hooked right from the start, this could easily be one of the best shows Netflix created. Shame on them for letting it slip away." Meanwhile, another added: "One of the best shows ever! A masterpiece. Incredibly sad it wasn't renewed."
Another viewer shared their thoughts after watching the critics' favourite show. They wrote: "Mindhunter is a slow-burn psychological thriller that gets under your skin in the best way. The writing is sharp, the performances are outstanding, and the attention to detail in portraying real-life serial killers is chilling.
All 10 episodes of the first season launched on Netflix in 2017, and due to high demand, it wasn't long before fans were given more when a season two dropped in 2019. It was then announced in 2020 that the creators of the show were working on other projects but had their eye on 'revisiting' Mindhunter in the future - before 2023, when it was confirmed the series was done for good.
Starring in the much-loved series are Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford, Holt McCallany as Bill Tench and Anna Torv as Wendy Carr. At the helm of the series was award-winning director David Fincher, best known for his outstanding work on 90s films such as Alien 3 and Fight Club as well as modern classics such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl.
A fan has commented on the entire production of the show, claiming, "Possibly the best show Netflix has made. No frills. Just amazing writing, directing, and acting. Everything. The attention to detail is remarkable."
Another review reads: "It's smart, methodical, and deeply unsettling-a masterclass in tension and character study. Just shy of perfect, only because it left me wanting more seasons!"
Someone else claimed it was "one of the best shows they've seen in a long time". They added that: "It starts slowly, allowing you to get to know all the characters and the depth they offer. I highly recommend this show."
In order to escape into your TV for the ultimate binge-watch, both seasons of Mindhunter are available to stream on Netflix now.
