According to experts, doing one thing every three months will help keep your mattress comfortable and delay the need to replace it. Flipping the mattress sounds like a massive chore, but it is easier and cheaper than buying a new bed.
According to the , the mean price paid across all sizes and types is £595, up from £565. The vast majority (76%) spend up to £799, and 43% pay less than £400. Paul Solly, chief commercial officer at , said that if you don't flip your mattress, you risk it sagging in one spot. He told : "By rotating and flipping your mattress, you distribute this wear across the entirety of the surface and avoid the sagging that will otherwise lead to discomfort and body aches from poor support."
"Most modern mattresses are designed to be rotated head-to-foot every few months to distribute wear evenly," agrees Bethany Lawrence, orthopaedic expert for .
"Some mattresses, particularly those with uniform construction on both sides, can also be flipped to prevent sagging and indentations. This simple maintenance routine can prolong the comfort and lifespan of your mattress, ensuring consistent support."
Before flipping or rotating your mattress, ensure that it is single or double-sided. If it's single-sided, rotate it 180 degrees; if it's double, rotate it and flip it over.
Other ways to make your mattress more comfortable include changing what the mattress sits on. Proper support for the mattress means proper support for you, so ensure you have a "supportive bed base" like a box spring or a slatted frame.
Another option is to buy a mattress topper or pad, which provides an additional layer that sits on top of your existing mattress, providing extra cushioning and support.
"A fraction of the cost of a new mattress, a high-quality topper can make a remarkable difference, especially when made from natural and organic materials like feather and down, wool and bamboo," says Mark Tremlett, founder of .
