NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta has publicly criticised the third umpire following a controversial decision during her team's Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 loss to Delhi Capitals .
The incident occurred in the 15th over of Punjab's batting innings, when Shashank Singh appeared to have struck a six off Mohit Sharma’s delivery. However, the third umpire ruled it as just a single, sparking outrage.

The drama unfolded when Karun Nair , fielding at the boundary, initially gestured that the ball had gone over the rope. Despite his signal, the third umpire adjudged that Nair's foot had not touched the boundary and deemed the effort clean, denying Punjab Kings five crucial runs.
Who's that IPL player?
Zinta, furious with the verdict, took to social media platform X to express her frustration. “In such a high-profile tournament with so much technology at the third umpire’s disposal, such mistakes are unacceptable & simply shouldn’t happen. I spoke to Karun after the game & he confirmed it was DEFINITELY a 6! I rest my case!” she wrote.
The decision became a major talking point, especially as it came in a match that had serious playoff implications. Punjab Kings suffered a six-wicket defeat that significantly dented their chances of securing a top-two finish.
Now, Punjab must beat Mumbai Indians in their final league game and hope other results go their way. Even a win might not be enough, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans both in the hunt for a spot in Qualifier 1.
